PLB- Emergency Beacon

Personal Location Beacon (PLB), also called an emergency beacon, is a radio transmitter that can be activated in an life-threatening situtaion to get help if needed. 

A Personal Locator Beacon or PLB for short, is a personal electronic transmitting device that is designed to alert potential rescuers to a life-threatening situation in the air, on water or in remote areas. When activated, the PLB sends out a signal on either a 406MHz frequency or Local Area System using 121.5MHz, VHF DSC and/or AIS.


You can select your pickup place from two locations in Iceland, in Reykjavik BSÍ Bus Terminal at the Iceland Camping Equipment store or in the Information Center in Ísafjörður in the Westfjords, Neðstakaupstað, Hafnarstræti 1, 400 Ísafjörður. Please put in comments which pick up place you choose. 

The price is 15 euros per day.

PLB PICK UP AND DROP OFF AT THE STORE AT BSÍ BUS TERMINAL IN REYKJAVIK MONDAY TO FRIDAY FROM 10 – 14 DURING THE WINTER TIME AND MONDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 9 - 17 FROM 1ST OF MAY UNTIL THE END OF SEPTEMBER! 

Order needs to be made three days in advance at least to secure that we are able to send all needed information to the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue!

The PLB is a distress radio beacon that transmits your location information directly to SAR (Search and Rescue) forces, letting them know that you are in grave danger and in need of immediate help. The PLB should only be used if all other means of communication and self-rescue have been tried and if the loss of life, limb, eyesight or valuable property will occur without assistance.
